It’s smaller, quieter, and better in every way. The MiST 2 (Moisture Induced Stress Tester) is here to help you conduct better moisture sensitivity tests and get better results.
In this post, we’ll review the MiST 2 and cover such topics as:
-
What the MiST 2 actually does
-
Why the MiST 2 matters
-
What comes in the box
-
Some of the MiST 2’s great features
What does the MiST 2 do?
It might look like a box with a carburetor on top of it, but what does the MiST 2 actually do?
The number one complaint about roadways is potholes, which are caused by moisture damage. The MiST 2 is designed to simulate what happens on a roadway to test how resistant an asphalt core is to moisture damage.
When it rains, the water settles over the top of the roadway. Then, when a large vehicle like a truck drives across that wet pavement, the tires hit that pavement and push the water into it, and then release it back out. This pushing and pulling motion is what the MiST 2 simulates with asphalt cores.
Why the MiST 2?
The Tensile Strength Ratio test (better known as the TSR) has been the main test used around the world for testing moisture damage resistance–except it’s been in existence for about fifty years, and hasn't changed all that much.
With the TSR and other similar tests, results could vary widely due to the lack of controls over the degree of saturation and temperature. These tests also do not replicate the dynamics of pore pressure and scouring created in the field by vehicle tires passing over wet pavement.
It was time for something new, something more efficient that provided better results. Enter the MiST 2! Its conditioning method provides the ability to determine both the adhesion and cohesion failure potentials of a mixture by exposing the samples to pore pressure for cohesion failure and hot water for adhesion failure. Several studies suggest that MiST 2 is the most complete moisture test available.
What’s in the box?
In addition to the MiST 2 unit itself, several helpful accessories also come in the box:
-
The water tank
-
Screws for securing the lid,
-
A beaker for transferring water to the tank
-
Power cord
-
Multiple bladders for creating water pressure
-
Platform for loading asphalt cores
Everything in the box is everything you need to get started conducting tests with your MiST 2.
What are some of the features?
The MiST 2 is packed with some great features, including:
-
Ultra-Quiet Design - Noise level is drastically reduced using a new innovative pneumatic system... You can almost hear a pin drop!
-
NEW! Benchtop Design - Smaller footprint allows for easy placement in any asphalt laboratory benchtop (30"L x 24" W x 30" H).
-
Lighter Weight - 3x lighter than the original at only 163 lbs!
-
Fully Automatic System - The unit will automatically drain after every test, maintaining a moisture-free environment and increasing reliability. Simply place the samples in the chamber, and the machine does the rest.
-
Smaller Unit/Same Capacity - Conditions: 2- 150mm, 3- 100mm, or 3- Ideal CT asphalt cores.
In addition to these new features, the MiST 2 has all the same features and benefits of the older model–just in a new, smaller package.
The MiST 2 is quiet, it’s lightweight, it's benchtop, and overall, is the best tool for testing moisture sensitivity.
